Computational Models of Analogy-Making

چکیده

Analogy-making is crucial for human cognition. Many cognitive processes involve analogymaking in one way or another: perceiving a stone as a human face, solving a problem in a way similar to another problem previously solved, arguing in court for a case based on its common structure with another case, understanding metaphors, communicating emotions, learning, translating poetry from one language to another (Gentner, Holyoak, & Kokinov, 2001). All these cases require an abstract mapping to be established between two cases or domains based on their common structure (common systems of relations). This may require re-representation of one (or both) of the domains in terms of the other one (or in terms of a third domain). The first domain is called the base (or source), and the second is referred to as the target.

Computational Models of Analogy-Making An Overview Analysis of Computational Approaches to Analogical Reasoning Minithesis

We provide an overview of research on computational models of analogy-making. The survey ranges from a fairly basic introduction to the topic of computational analogy-making to reporting some quite recent advanced results concerning the study of these systems, their properties and particularities. When doing so, we mainly take a cognitive modeling and computer sciences inspired point of view, m...

Analogy-making as Predication Using Relational Information and LSA Vectors

Current models of analogy comprehension use hand coded representations. As Hummel and Holyoak (2003) put it, “the problem pf hand-coded representations is among the most serious problems facing computational modeling as a scientific enterprise: All models are sensitive to their representations, so the choice of representation is among the most powerful wild cards at the modeler’s disposal” (p. ...

Automating the Encoding for the LISA Model of Analogy from Raw Text

Analogy is an integral part of human cognition. Consequently researchers would like to produce computational models of analogy to test implementations of theoretical claims. Such computational models have relied almost exclusively upon hand-coded representations, making the resulting models too dependent upon the modeler’s choices, and thus dicult to interpret in isolation of the modeler. In a...

Interpretation-driven mapping: A framework for conducting search and rerepresentation in parallel for computational analogy in design

This paper presents a framework for the interactions between the processes of mapping and re-representation within analogy-making. Analogical reasoning systems for use in design tasks require representations that are open to being reinterpreted. The framework, Interpretation Driven Mapping, casts the process of constructing an analogical relationship as requiring iterative, parallel interaction...

Analogy-making in Situation Theory

Analogy-making is finding analogies between different situations. In this paper, we provide a new model of computational analogy-making which uses Situation Theory as its formal background. Situation Theory is a semantic and logical theory which provides a naturalistic way to represent relations in situations. The system described in this paper is aimed at solving analogy problems made by basic...

Executive Control in Analogical Reasoning: Beyond Interference Resolution

In recent studies, analogy-making has been shown to depend on the ability to resist interference. In our large-sample correlational study we found that efficiency of analogical reasoning is strongly related to measures of diverse executive control functions, far beyond interference resolution. These functions included interference resolution itself, but also: goal activation and application, in...
